Radiant Baby The renowned street artist’s 1980s drawings of barking dogs, flying saucers and crawling babies became a visual language for an entire generation and beyond. The art expressed themes of birth, death and sexuality. In his later work, he used his iconography to advocate for safe sex and AIDS awareness. The figure that symbolizes Haring’s spirituality is the radiant baby. The radiant baby is a symbol of youthful innocence, goodness and potential. The radiance also suggests that the baby has a special power and is a source of light. The radiant baby is often portrayed in his paintings with three eyes. Unfortunately, Stuart Ross’s book and lyrics by Debra Barsha and Ira Gasman lack the wit and emotional depth of the real Keith Haring. Daniel Reichard gives a dazzling performance as the hip-hopping, art-centric Haring, but his character lacks complexity. Likewise, Kate Jennings Grant as his chronically worried office manager; Aaron Lohr as his hunky photographer; and Keong Sim as his AIDS-stricken lover all play cloyingly sentimental roles. Globe Haring’s use of saturated block colours, flat shapes and simplified lines were influenced by the Pop Art movement, bridging high art and popular culture. He had learned basic cartooning skills as a child and was inspired by the animation of Walt Disney, Charles Schultz and Dr Seuss. When he first arrived in New York, he became involved with the city’s underground art scene and befriended fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. The group shared a passion for urban street culture and the idea of using art in accessible public spaces, such as nightclubs. As well as creating art in galleries, Haring produced a number of monumental public works. These ranged from the anti-drug mural Crack is Wack in a Harlem playground to an illuminated version of his radiant baby in Times Square. His desire to make his work accessible to a wide audience led him to open the Pop Shop in 1986, selling T-shirts and other merchandise featuring his iconic images. | |
