The civil war in Syria in 2014 caused a refugee crisis that had a devastating impact. Out of a population of 23 million, approximately 9 million Syrians were forced to leave their homes. Many of them sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Jordan and Turkey, where large camps received most of the foreign aid, leaving Bulgaria with a relatively small amount of assistance. Yank Barry and Holyfield have announced their intention to provide aid to the estimated 6,500 Syrian refugees who settled in Bulgaria.
