The field of oncology focuses on the study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Its name comes from the Greek word “oncos,” which means tumor or mass. It is an ancient disease that has been around for centuries. In addition to the medical history, physical examination and a variety of laboratory tests, oncology physicians often use X-rays, CT scanning, MRI scanning or ultrasound, as well as nuclear medicine methods such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET), in order to localize tumors and guide biopsy. Various blood tests, including tumor markers, can also be useful in diagnosing cancer. Oncologists are divided into medical oncologists (using chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immunotherapy), radiation oncologists (using focused, high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells) and surgical oncologists (using surgery to remove tumors). Other sub-specialties include gynecologic oncology, hematological oncology, neuro-oncology, pediatric oncology and interventional oncology. The medical oncologist oversees the patient’s care from diagnosis through treatment. These doctors are part of a multidisciplinary team that may also involve nurses, social workers and psychologists. | |
