India’s oil and natural gas demand is accelerating sharply, driven by rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and a clean-energy shift. According to the IEA, natural gas consumption is projected to surge nearly 60%, from ~65 bcm in 2023 to 103 bcm by 2030. This translates to a ≈7% CAGR, heavily led by city-gas distribution (CNG/PNG), where demand in CGD may grow ~70% through 2030. Industrial, refining, and power applications also contribute, adding ~15 bcm, ~4 bcm, and ~15 bcm respectively by 2030 . Looking ahead, PNGRB forecasts that gas demand could double by 2040, reaching ~114 bcm. One scenario (“Good-to-Best”) estimates daily demand at 365 mmscmd by 2030 and 630 mmscmd by 2040. CGD remains the powerhouse: by 2030, it may account for nearly one-third of gas use, overtaking fertilizer consumption. To meet this growth, domestic supply will reach approximately 38 bcm/year by 2030, a modest 8% increase. This growth is insufficient, so LNG imports must double to ~65 bcm/year by 2030. Meanwhile, India is poised to drive the largest global oil demand surge through 2030, adding ~1 million barrels per day—the highest growth trajectory worldwide.
